I love Michael McIntyre and heard him in full flow talking to Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear before he very nearly overturned the ‘reasonably priced’ car.
He made me (Jeremy and other women drivers at the show) laugh out loud about his efforts to overtake the likes of a Porsche in a small, old and under-powered car. We could all identify with him I think. Very funny.
His story reminded me of when I first took delivery of a new company car, a Ford RS Turbo, in the late 80s. In those days I did choose performance cars but that was before I had my family and thought seriously about the consequences of speed…
Having attended an evening travel industry function in December and in central Brighton, full of cold and having consumed much Benylin (no alcohol, trust me) I took the coast road and at a set of traffic lights decided to give the car its head (for the first time) alongside another car.
Which is exactly what I did and it was some time before the ‘other’ car caught me up, this time with a flashing light and siren – attributes I had failed to observe when deciding to challenge the same car earlier.
I got breath tested, was put through the mill and ended up with points in my licence. Fair enough.
I won’t ever do it again of course – it was particularly stupid of me (not to look) … but I did get a real buzz at the time. Which I remember vividly even 20 years later.
The RS had a checkered history after that; but that’s another story for another blog/day.
