About car insurance - for women
The cost of car insurance for women has risen dramatically this year. We are told this is because insurance companies haven't made a profit on motoring claims for a while in the face of bogus claims, uninsured accidents and staged motoring scams.
And despite women being the cheaper gender for them to insure (because we have less serious and expensive accidents by and large) we are to be charged the same insurance premiums as men from December 2012. The EU thinks this is fair and will be an excuse for car insurance premiums for women to rise even more.
So it's increasingly important to shop around for your car insurance on a regular basis.
Is price the most important factor?
Comparison websites tempt us to buy insurance on the basis of price. But we all know that you get what you pay for in the end. If you buy the cheapest car insurance regardless, then you shouldn't expect the best service at accident time and/or when you may need to claim. And whilst no insurer would admit it, we see cases where premiums are ramped up in Year Two to make up the difference because few of us go through the comparison website shopping hoop every year.
So it is VERY IMPORTANT that you always read the small print and understand precisely what you are buying (and might be sacrificing) when it's the cheapest price on offer.
For example, an excess of more than £100 (this is the money YOU pay at claims time and before your insurer pays anything) can mean that YOU carry the financial risk of small claims, not the insurer.
And despite it being 'Your Choice' in law to have your car repaired by the accident repair centre of your choice, there seems nothing to stop motor insurers charging you a supplement to use a bodyshop outside their network. Yes, you might expect an insurer's garage to be one of the best there are, but they aren't always and you don't always get the best customer service when it comes to courtesy cars and quick repairs.
Please also remember that ignorance or forgetfulness are not excuses at claims time. Be aware of your car insurance policy cover, always tell the truth and keep your insurer up to date with speed and traffic convictions. No-one wants their car insurance to be null and void because of a momentary lapse of memory after an accident or at any other claims time.
Comparison website or insurance broker?
Nowadays it's fashionable to use comparison websites but we find that leading High Street insurance brokers can often match or even improve upon their best prices AND they give you personal service of course. Take your pick; pick up the phone on occasion and see for yourself. The commissions insurers pay brokers are about the same as the ones they pay websites.
