• Be prepared to walk away if you don't get the discount you want.
• Be alert - dealers can make a lot of money on added extras after you've committed to buy the car.
• Be alert - Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) has been missold in the past - read the small print.
• Always check a used car before you buy - many aren't what they claim to be. You have few legal rights if you buy a dud from a private individual.
• Always check up on any unknown private seller as well as the vehicle.
• Put a stability control braking system at the top of your new car shopping list.
