Age discrimination 'rife' within car insurance
A price comparison site states age discrimination is affecting female drivers looking for car insurance.
Moneysupermarket.com claims a 17-year-old female driver can expect to pay an average of £1,943 a year, which is 57 per cent more than they would after turning 18.
At 18, the average cost of an insurance policy falls overnight to £843.
However, it adds female younger drivers looking for cover often find their premiums are cheaper compared to their male counterparts.
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at the website, said: "It is surprising these overnight price fluctuations still occur.
"Young and newly qualified drivers have long been perceived as high risk by the insurance industry and often find it hard to get competitive motor insurance."
Meanwhile, research from website uSwitch has revealed people who have been made redundant could face higher car insurance premiums as a result.
