Are you being ripped off on car repairs?

One way female motorists can check they are not overpaying for repairs is to study new research by Warranty Direct.

According to the company, the auto transmission is the most expensive car part to repair, costing an average of £987 and a maximum of £2,726 - which should give an indication of what motorists may be charged.

Fixing the air conditioning - which may be vital as the summer approaches - can cost an average of £423 and a maximum of £1,422.

The survey also found drivers in Northern Ireland and the north-west say they are most dependent on their car (84 per cent and 80 per cent respectively), so they may be more inclined to visit a garage and pay any repair cost to get their automobile back on the road.

Meanwhile, a recent study by vehicle care specialist Comma found one in 20 motorists did not know to use a dipstick to see whether their oil needs topping up, which could mean a lack of knowledge is a reason for some car faults.
