Boost for women-led businesses
13 March 08

Businesses led by women are to receive a funding boost from the government following the launch of a new ten-year strategy to improve enterprise in the UK.

Enterprise: Unlocking the UK's Talent outlines a number of ways that the government aims to help nurture businesses, skills and entrepreneurs as well as reduce red tape.

One of the moves outlined in the strategy is the commitment of £12.5 million to co-invest in a £25 million capital fund aimed at providing financing for women-led enterprises.

"The UK's long-term prosperity lies in unlocking the talent of enterprise for people from all sections of society and in our small businesses, helping them to grow," said John Hutton, business and enterprise secretary.

Mr Hutton also said that the government wants "more companies and people acting on their enterprising ideas".

Sarah Anderson, who ran her Mayday Group employment business for 19 years in addition to other interests, will head an independent review into giving small businesses clear understanding of legislation.

The announcement follows recent news that the government is committing further funds to the Women and Work Sector Pathways Initiative.
