Smaller and more economical cars are seemingly becoming popular with both male and female motorists, according to the latest research from a motoring portal for new and used cars.

Website JustGoodCars has found that models such as the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, Peugeot 107 and Citroens are being searched for much more than last year.

"Consumers are now paying £1.08 per litre for unleaded fuel and £1.17 for diesel against 42p for unleaded and 40p for diesel in 1990. We can see that small cars are going to be very desirable," said Andrew Sobell, sales and marketing director for JustGoodCars.

Despite this, Mr Sobell also noted that hybrid vehicles were not high on the desirability list, while petrol models were more searched for than their diesel counterparts.

More than six million cars are currently listed for sale on the JustGoodCars site, 600,000 of which are UK-based, suggesting female motorists could find themselves a good eco-friendly bargain.
