Campaigner calls for traffic lights to be scrapped 30 June 08
A campaign group is calling for the removal of traffic lights on Britain's roads to improve safety.
Fitroads.org said the latest accident figures showed too many people were still being hurt in UK car accidents.
The group claimed examples in other countries showed the UK should adopt a 'shared space' approach without lights, encouraging drivers to take more responsibility for the welfare of pedestrians.
Fitroads.org said: "If policymakers harnessed human nature instead of hampering it, they would see most road safety problems disappear."
A statement from the group added it was preparing a "lights off" trial proposal to test the theory that motoring would improve without traffic lights.
Female drivers concerned about road safety could be interested in the idea, which could also reduce fuel consumption if put into practice.
The shared space theory, already in use in Drachten in Holland, could result in more female-friendly motoring as research has shown most drivers react in a co-operative manner when lights are not used.
Claiming the current system is "unfit", Fitroads.org campaigns for the scrapping of traffic lights in favour of "common sense and courtesy".
