Car dealers "need to play by the rules"

Foxy lady drivers prefer new car dealerships that have signed the female friendly FOXY Promise© to never knowingly overcharge, patronise or sell women motorists' services they don't need.

Car dealers need to operate in a fair fashion in order to gain the confidence of female drivers, it has been asserted.

Richard Headland, the editor of Which? Car, makes his comments after the publication of an undercover report by the consumer rights organisation.

While carrying out the investigation, the body said it found "plenty" of examples of advice that was unclear, poor in quality or misleading.

It suspects a number of dealers are using 'bait and switch' strategies, where they advertise a vehicle despite knowing they do not have one in stock, with the intention of selling a different one.

Additionally, Which? believes 'pressure selling' - where a dealer implies a fake deadline for a discount offer - took place in the instances it investigated.

Mr Headland states: "Our investigation was just a snapshot, but we still found several examples of dubious sales advice. If dealers want to win the confidence of consumers, especially in these tough times, they need to play by the rules."

The consumer watchdog has a history dating back more than 50 years.
