The debate over the future of the green car industry is hotting up, with consumers divided over the idea of giving up larger cars.

A study from Liberty Electric Cars has found buyers are generally willing to pay up to 30 per cent extra for a zero-emission vehicle.

However, 45 per cent said they would not be willing to downsize to a small city car with less performance in order to go green.

Boss of Liberty Electric Cars, Barry Shrier, said: "As car buyers move to more environmentally-friendly technologies they want the best of both worlds - cars that deliver on performance, safety, functionality and style, without the high cost to the environment."

Mr Shrier's firm is developing the world's first zero-emission electric Range Rover, set to have a range of over 200 miles.

Women drivers thinking of buying a female friendly new car with low emissions could be interested in the study, which also found 55 per cent of people expect an electric vehicle to have a driving range of more than 100 miles.

Liberty Electric Cars is ploughing £30 million into the re-engineering of large luxury models and performance vehicles in a bid to tap into the expanding electric vehicles market.
