'Cost of car insurance has increased'
11 August 08

Women drivers may be paying more for their car insurance now than they did 12 months ago, according to new research.

The latest Sainsbury's Car Insurance Index shows that the average premium cost in June 2008 was £514.36.

It stated that this is an increase of 5.8 per cent on average between July 2007 and June 2008 and the first time the amount has exceeded £500 since the index began in June 2005.

However, it may be that female friendly dealers across the industry offer cheaper deals to women motorists - as foxy lady drivers they are often considered safer on the road than men.

According to Sainsbury's car insurance manager Joanne Mallon, a rise in personal injury claims and repairs is behind the increase.

This comes as research from moneysupermarket.com recently found that male drivers new to the road often pay around £1,200 more than women drivers to take out a car insurance policy.
