British drivers - potentially including female motorists - have increasingly been shelling out for parking penalties in the last few years.

According to figures from the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, cited by the Telegraph, the number of motorists hit by parking tickets has increased fivefold over the last six years.

The statistics show that between 2006 and 2007, a tenth of all drivers received a parking ticket.

This equates to 3.58 million motorists and compares with the 794,851 drivers who had to pay up for parking mishaps in 2000-01.

Additionally, this year is expected to see a further rise in those receiving penalties to reflect the fact that about a fifth of councils have now taken on responsibility for parking enforcement in their area.

Changes have recently been made to parking regulations, increasing the fine for illegally using a disabled space to £70.
