Drivers 'risking no-insurance fines' 24 April 08
Some 350,000 drivers - a number that could include female motorists - are risking fines and prosecution by taking to the road without insurance, according to the latest research.
A survey from MoneyExpert revealed that this number admitted to the crime in the last year, with 46 per cent saying they did so because their motor insurance policy had elapsed without them realising.
More than one in ten (13 per cent) said that they deliberately avoided getting car insurance, while 11 per cent suggested they could not afford to get insurance for their car.
"It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk," said Sean Gardner from MoneyExpert.
He added that the cost of car insurance for women drivers or their male counterparts could not be the only reason for people committing the crime as "premiums have not risen to such a degree".
According to the RAC, one in ten drivers has been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.
