A female friendly car insurer is warning motorists to check they have appropriate cover before heading for foreign roads this summer.

Sheilas' Wheels said a survey of drivers has revealed 15 per cent assume they are automatically covered comprehensively to drive abroad.

Nearly half of all drivers plan to swap air travel when heading to Europe in an effort to save money, the poll also showed.

Jacky Brown of Sheilas' Wheels car insurance said: "When planning to take a car to Europe, it is crucial for motorists to tell their insurer they want to extend their level of cover for driving abroad."

Further survey results showed 47 per cent of motorists drive illegally in Europe by not carrying warning triangles, which are compulsory for many countries on the continent.

Sheilas' Wheels offers car insurance for women drivers, including handbag cover with up to £300 of cover for bags and contents stolen from cars.

Ealier this month the firm released another poll revealing women had caused an average of £6.55 worth of damage to their own property in the last year thanks to over-enthusiastic home workouts.
