Establishing blame 'could be waste of time'

Punishing innocent parties in traffic collisions by pushing up their car insurance premiums makes "a mockery" of accident reports, it has been claimed.

Research by Auto Express found trying to establish blame for a crash could be pointless as some cover providers deal with all the individuals involved in much the same way.

The investigation revealed a number of companies increase prices for those who were not at fault almost as much as they do for those who caused the accident.

Revised quotes for people involved in collisions from Admiral, Tesco, Aviva, Direct Line and Churchill were all examined.

The first of these providers was found to push up its premiums for the at-fault driver by £176 and for the victim by £149.

When asked for the reasons behind this, Admiral explained anyone who is involved in an incident regardless of their role in the prang is at a higher risk of being involved in another collision.

Commenting on the situation, Julie Sinclair from Auto Express said: "It makes a mockery of all the legal wrangling and accident reports post-crash that are supposed to determine blame."

Meanwhile, ladies may find researching women's car insurance information can help them find the best providers.
