'False female-friendly insurance claims'
01 July 08

Womens car insurance deals are not always the cheapest option, according to a new study by Swiftcover.

Money experts Fool.co.uk said the survey by the leading insurer suggests that standard insurance firms may be able to provide women drivers with a better quote.

The financial advice site said many specialist insurers offer clever marketing rather than cheap quotes and warned savvy consumers not to be sucked in by marketing gimmicks.

Esther Shaw from Fool.co.uk said: "Sequin-clad ladies in a cadillac promising 'bonzer car insurance deals' may well draw you in."

"[But] specialist insurers for women won't always offer the best deal," she added.

Swiftcover calculated the cost of insuring a 35-year-old female driver from Birmingham who drives a 1984 Passat – and quotes varied wildly.

The insurers own quote was nearly £100 cheaper than Sheila's Wheels and more than £600 cheaper than specialist insurer Diamond.

Sheila's Wheels, which is a subsidiary of esure, was started on the premise that women drivers have fewer accidents than men.

The insurer also offers £300 handbag cover as standard.
