Female motorists 'hanging onto their cars for longer'

Women drivers are more reluctant to shell out for a new car in the current economic climate than their male counterparts, according to new research by esure car insurance.

The poll revealed 74 per cent of female motorists were planning to keep hold of their existing motor for longer in order to save money, compared to 67 per cent of male vehicle owners.

Meanwhile, some 48 per cent of those questioned said they were also considering downscaling to one car per household.

Commenting on the findings, Mike Pickard from esure said it was unsurprising people were opting to reduce the number of vehicles they own.

He added: "The fact that they're also keeping their cars for longer is proof that UK drivers are becoming increasingly conscious of keeping motoring costs down."

Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers has said people with car insurance are paying higher premiums as a result of those people prepared to get behind the wheel without cover.
