Women drivers are more concerned about the environmental credentials of a new car than their male counterparts, according to a new survey by information services company Experian.

A poll by the group found 65 per cent of female motorists were worried about the effect their current vehicle was having on the planet, compared with 45 per cent of men.

And some 30 per cent of women drivers said they would be looking for an environmentally-friendly vehicle when they came to replace their current motor, against 23 per cent of their male counterparts.

Kirk Fletcher from Experian said: "Customers concerned about the environment will have a lot of questions to ask before they make their final decision to buy."

He added that dealers will need to have this information to hand if they want to secure a sale.
