FOXY Newsdesk Female motorists 'may soon be helping to generate electricity'
Environmentally-friendly women drivers may find they are able to help generate a cheap source of electricity in the future, it has been claimed.
According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), a new type of road that creates power as traffic drives over it could one day become a reality in the UK.
Israeli engineers who developed the project claimed a 1 km stretch of the electricity-generating asphalt will be able to produce 400 kilowatts - enough to run eight small cars.
Commenting on the innovation, Andrew Davis, director at ETA, said the government was predicting a massive shift to electric vehicles and this technology had the potential to allow certain vehicles to be powered completely by the roads on which they drive.
He stated: "If these electric roads can be put in place without harm to the environment they would be a silver lining to the problem of heavy traffic."
Earlier this year, ETA claimed a trial of road-user charging - planned for 2009 - could help reassure drivers that this kind of scheme need not be costly or an intrusion on their privacy.
