Female motorists 'urged to help keep kids safe on the road'

Women drivers with children who have just passed their test can do a number of things to help keep their kids safe on the road, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed.

The organisation warned that novice drivers - particularly teenagers - are at most risk behind the wheel during the first few months after qualifying.

In order to reduce their chances of being involved in an accident, the group suggested parents encourage children to keep up with lessons even after passing their test.

The motoring organisation also advised mums and dads to accompany their offspring on trips in a variety of conditions - such as at night, on rural roads and in poor visibility.

In addition, it stated taking children on routes they are likely to drive on a regular basis and pointing out potential hazards can be helpful.

Meanwhile, IAM recently claimed parents needed to get involved in attempts to cut the number of young male drivers getting behind the wheel without car insurance.
