Female motorists warned over in-car gadgets
27 March 08

Women drivers potentially need to be more careful when it comes to leaving gadgets in their cars, new research has highlighted.

According to statistics released by swiftcover.com, some 96 per cent of all drivers regularly leave gadgets in their car, despite the possibility of attracting thieves.

"Satnavs, mp3 players, mobile phones and digital cameras are a thief's dream," said Tina Shortle, marketing director of swiftcover.com. "They are easy to snatch, easy to conceal and because they are desirable items, easy to sell on."

The research showed that the most popular in-car gadget was a mobile phone (98 per cent of drivers), followed by a digital camera (45 per cent).

Ms Shortle added that the contents of a car can prove "a bonanza for our light-fingered foes".

One in three said they had left their in-car gadget on display on a car seat or a dashboard, with 21 per cent saying they have paid the price by having their car broken into.

Female drivers in Slough have felt the force of this problem in the last two weeks with local newspaper the Maidenhead Advertiser noting figures that show an average of four satnavs have been stolen from cars each day during the fortnight.
