Recent statistics showing that males are twice as likely as females to drive without car insurance are "worrying", it has been claimed.

The findings, by MoneySupermarket.com, also highlight that one in seven Britons have got behind the wheel without the necessary cover, with almost a quarter of people in their 20s admitting to the crime.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, commented: "This is an extremely worrying statistic, but it is no less worrying than the fact that 84 per cent of all women's convictions last year were for speeding offences."

Steph Savill, founder of FOXY Lady Drivers Club, stated: "These statistics confirm important differences in the motoring mindset between men and women drivers.

"Our experience is that most women who are caught speeding have only marginally exceeded the speed limit as they dash from one job to another, whereas men - who are more likely to drive without motor insurance - drive fast enough to cause serious accidents."

She added, however, that all such incidents should be condemned, as they lead to inflated premiums for law-abiding drivers.
