Finances 'put the brakes on car repairs'

New research has revealed more than half of Britain's motorists would find it hard to pay for the cost of a breakdown.

According to Warranty Direct data, one in three drivers suffers a mechanical failure every year - and should this happen 53 per cent of them would struggle to pay the repair costs.

With an average repair bill being £273, Warranty Direct's Duncan McClure Fisher says it is worrying so many people feel their budgets are stretched so thin they cannot afford to keep their cars running.

He adds, in the short term, women drivers and their male counterparts may "save a bit of cash" by not servicing their car.

However, he says eventually the vehicle is going to need remedial work and "you're only increasing the likelihood that it's going to be a very expensive repair job on a mobility-fatal part".

One way female motorists could cut costs is to ensure their tyres are correctly inflated, as this effects fuel economy, according to Clean Green Cars.
