Government 'should focus on protecting young drivers'
More needs to be done to help young male and female drivers stay safe on UK roads, it has been claimed.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said government proposals to reduce traffic accident fatalities by a third over the next decade are laudable.
However, it expressed disappointment that there was not more focus on the well-being of newly qualified motorists.
It welcomed planned changes to learning and testing methods, but insisted the government should think about introducing a minimum one-year training period.
The group pointed out a third of all deaths in the 15 to 19-year old age group in the UK occur as the result of traffic collisions.
Nick Starling, ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Every day too many lives are still cut short or ruined on our roads."
Young female motorists struggling to secure cheap cover as a result of their age may find specialist insurance for women drivers is a cost-effective option, as ladies are generally considered to pose a lower risk than their male counterparts.
