Holidaymakers 'should not rely on satnavs'

Male and female motorists who are planning on jumping in their car to get away from it all this summer should not rely solely on their satnav, it has been claimed.

According to the Driving Standards Agency, people should plan a route before leaving home instead of leaving all the work to modern technology.

It explained drivers will need to check road signs and use their common sense, rather than simply assuming a satnav will get them to their destination safely.

The organisation also warned motorists against trying to meet the device's estimated time of arrival at any cost.

It stated the information should be used as a guide and drivers should not risk their own safety and that of other road users by trying to match it or better it.

DSA chief driving examiner Trevor Wedge said following such advice could help a vacation "get off to the best possible start".

Taking on board these types of tips may also reduce a motorist's chances of being involved in an accident and might put ladies in a better position to protect the cheap premiums they secured by opting for specialist insurance for women drivers.
