'Inappropriate speed is the killer'
Speed limits do not prevent road deaths, according to the author of a road-user's rights website.
Inappropriate speed is the killer not fast drivers, according to Martin Cassini, author of Fit Roads.
He said speed limits were counter-productive and male and female motorists should be left to their own devices and use their own common sense when deciding what speed to drive at.
Mr Cassini quotes car researcher Chad Dornsife, who said: "The desired effect of speed limits is achieved by removing them."
After a trial in Montana, which saw the state remove speed limits on its roads, road traffic accidents hit an "all-time low" despite the amount of traffic on the roads increasing by 15 per cent, according to Mr Dornsife.
He said: "In traffic engineering findings the vehicles travelling faster than average have the lowest accident rates."
