Raising the age limit for consumption of alcohol to 21 could significantly reduce the number of fatal car crashes, according to a new study.

Laws making it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol had led to an 11 per cent cut in traffic deaths among the young, according to the July issue of Accident Analysis and Prevention.

The American study, funded by the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program, found that strong ID laws also contributed to a reduction in road deaths in under-21s.

James Fell of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation said: "There has been evidence since the 1980s that an increase in the drinking age to 21 was having an impact on traffic deaths."

"But this is the first time we've been able to tease out the real effect," he added.

According to the BBC, the number of female drivers convicted of drink or drug-driving offenses increased by nearly 60 per cent in the nine years from 1995.
