London residents are among the people the least keen on new alternative fuel car technology, a survey suggests.

Despite areas of the city being subject to an emission-related congestion charge, the capital is no green fan base, according to newcarnet.co.uk.

More than one in three men and women drivers in London said they would not even consider an alternative fuel car, the firm says.

Newcarnet.co.uk spokesman Massimo Pini said: "People need to know the real financial benefits and feel confident that alternative fuels are widely available if they're going to switch from petrol and diesel."

The research also suggests women drivers in the north-east are also not keen on green motoring with about 43 per cent of drivers of both sexes in this area not looking to buy an eco fuel car.

Foxy lady drivers looking to save on the increasing cost of driving could go for women's car insurance policies in an effort to save money on cover.

Experts from environmental group Clean Green Cars have said the Toyota Prius hybrid car is "only the tip of the ice berg" when it comes to the future of green motoring.
