MSP requests no rise in petrol prices 06 March 08
An MSP has called upon chancellor Alistair Darling to reconsider plans to increase fuel duty by 2p per litre of petrol and diesel next month.
Scottish National Party MSP for Aberdeen North Brian Adam is calling upon others to join him in requesting the cost not be increased in April.
The politician has written to the chancellor asking him to look for ways in which the price can be reduced, after rising by 25p a litre over the past four years.
He told the Press and Journal: "This not only affects the cost of running a car for the public, but the prices of food and other goods, most of which are shipped to us by diesel-consuming lorries."
Mr Adam went on to state that moves by Westminster to cause inflation by increasing fuel taxes made no sense in the wake of their instruction to the Bank of England to keep inflation down.
"I hope that others will get behind the campaign to see stability brought to the price of fuel," he added.
Last year's Budget also outlined plans for a further rise in petrol prices of 1.84p in 2009.
