Men and women drivers have very similar motoring likes and dislikes, it has been suggested.

Carmony.co.uk conducted research that found male and females are not so different when it comes to their knowledge about autos and their behaviour behind the wheel.

The website dubbed this new generation of motorists the 'petrosexuals'.

According to the survey, women are closing in on men in terms of car knowledge – with 57 per cent of ladies able to explain the difference between a coupe and a hatchback, compared to 65 per cent of their male counterparts.

However, the poll did highlight some differences between the sexes – with 17 per cent of female motorists giving their vehicles pet names.

In comparison, 12 per cent of men admitted having a special moniker for their motor.

Meanwhile, ladies who are looking to book their auto in for car servicing may find a female-friendly garage provides valuable peace of mind.

Businesses that have been awarded this title agree not to patronise or overcharge their customers – regardless of their sex.
