Politicians are calling for action from the government after details of a document suggested more motorists are driving without car insurance.

The transport committee has examined the Department for Transport's 2007 report, which said £214 is now lost every year from drivers evading road tax.

The group said the figures suggest an apparent increase in the number of people who are driving vehicles not fit for the roads or without car insurance.

Transport committee chair Louise Ellman, said: "The department must be clear about identifying its main priorities and showing how progress can be measured."

The transport committee is calling on the government to re-introduce targets it dropped in 2007 which were designed to reduce the number of drivers without licences.

Women drivers with female friendly car insurance could be affected by the figures, which suggest there is an increasing risk of being hit by an uninsured drivers.

The transport committee scrutinises what the Department for Transport spends money on and monitors the policies it adopts.
