Women drivers could be shocked to learn more than a million UK drivers have driven without insurance in the last 12 months, according to a survey.

Statistics released by Sainsbury's Bank suggest around 1.15 million have taken to the roads without insurance cover in the last year.

Female motorists are likely to have been among the total, with around two fifths of younger drivers aged 17 to 24 owning up to the offence.

Sainsbury's Bank reminded motorists that it is illegal to drive a car without cover and said: "Penalties for those caught doing this include fines, being banned from driving and even having your car crushed."

Older people aged over 65 were the least likely to have driven without cover, with less than one per cent admitting it in the survey.

Previous research has shown women drivers have a similar number of accidents to male drivers but usually have accidents which are less serious and result in less damage.

Government figures have also suggested men are also much more likely to commit motoring offences than women.
