'Motorists have hearts set on 4x4s this year' 29 February 08
Despite their environmentally-unfriendly status, many motorists are planning to buy a 4x4 this year, a survey has shown.
According to a study by Direct Line, 1.2 million Britons will select a so-called gas-guzzler this year rather than opting for a greener alternative.
In fact, the survey found that drivers are four times more likely to buy a less fuel-efficient vehicle in 2008 than more environmentally-conscious vehicles.
Of those questioned, 22 per cent said they would be opting for a brand new car, with Ford being most popular marque to select.
Tony Chilcott, head of car insurance at Direct Line, commented: "As a nation, we take pride in our cars and with new car registration plates available in the spring, March is a popular time of year for people to purchase a new one. Choosing a more fuel-efficient car can limit further damage to the environment, as well as provide financial benefits."
Adrian Bryant, from Halifax Credit Cards, recently urged car buyers to consider how they will finance both small and large motoring purchases.
