New advert warns of dangers of driving and texting
The government has launched a new radio advert to warn male and female motorists about the dangers of texting behind the wheel.
Listeners will hear a text message being spelt out and then the sound of a car crash.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick explained the Department for Transport was keen to highlight the dangers of using a mobile phone in this manner after research revealed 30 per cent of young drivers have sent a message while in control of a vehicle.
In addition to the radio advert, an online game is available on social networking and entertainment sites, which demonstrates how hard it is to text and concentrate on the road.
Mr Fitzpatrick commented: "The message that mobile phones and driving should not mix is getting through to the majority of drivers, but some people are still needlessly risking their own lives."
Female motorists who are caught using a handset behind the wheel may find they lose access to the best deals on specialist insurance for women drivers.
