New cars 'should be equipped with tyre pressure gauges'
By choosing a garage or dealership that has signed the female friendly FOXY Promise© women drivers can avoid being patronised, overcharged or mis-sold services at MOT, car servicing or vehicle repair times.
Women drivers may welcome a call for all new cars to be equipped with a tyre pressure-reading device.
Gem Motoring Assist pointed out defective or under-inflated tyres were a factor in the deaths of 43 motorists last year and also played a part in approximately 1,000 other accidents.
Therefore, female motorists who do not want to shell out for expensive car repairs may want to start checking their tyre pressure more regularly.
David Williams, chief executive at Gem, said: "People are very neglectful about checking their tyres and that is reflected in more than one million MOT failures in 2007/08 as a result of tyre defects."
He added getting tyres checked on petrol station forecourts could give drivers a false sense of security, as gauges used at such establishments could be inaccurate.
Mr Williams concluded that adding a digital tyre pressure reader in the tool kits of new cars would be relatively cheap and could save lives.
In other news, Gem recently warned motorists to be especially vigilant when driving at night, as 40 per cent of all road accidents occur when it is dark.
