New female drivers 'could get insurance cut incentive'
07 May 08

Young women drivers could benefit from extra training and get a cut in their insurance costs after high-level talks.

The Times reports transport secretary Ruth Kelly met with insurance bosses this week to discuss new advanced tests and possible discounts for motorists who take them.

Foxy Lady Drivers Club members who have recently passed their tests could get cheaper premiums alongside other members if a deal is reached on new courses, which could include motorway driving.

Quoted by the paper, a Department for Transport Source said: "This is about creating the right sort of education and incentivising people to do it."

Both sexes are likely to benefit if the proposals are finalised as young drivers can end up paying thousands of pounds a year in insurance costs.

An advanced driving course is already available but is only taken up by a small proportion of people who pass their initial tests.

Breaking at high speed is another skill which has reportedly been considered as part of any new advanced course.

Driving curfews and passenger limits for new male and female drivers have previously been touted by officials, but are understood to now be on the back burner.
