Women drivers struggling with the rising cost of petrol could be interested in a mechanism a newspaper says would slice 14p off the price of a litre of unleaded.

The Daily Express has developed a theoretical system which would see money used from the government's £6 billion "windfall" from higher taxes on North Sea oil.

This cash would be used to run a price stabiliser scheme which would be based on the fluctuating price of oil.

According to the Daily Express the system is the opposite of the fuel price escalator set to arrive in October.

Consumer editor Louise Barnett reports: "If the average price of crude was 126 dollars a barrel, a conservative estimate, that would mean prices at the pumps going down by 14p."

The paper added it was planning to present an 85,000-strong petition to Downing Street in an effort to force action on the issue.

Women drivers angry over the rising cost of fuel alongside regular tax and female friendly car insurance payments could be interested in the idea.

Recent figures from the AA showed two-thirds of 18,500 members questioned would vote for a different government if petrol prices ended up above 149p per litre.
