Novice drivers 'must focus on basic maintenance'
Young male and female drivers could end up facing hefty repair bills because they are unsure about how to carry out basic maintenance, it has been suggested.
Comma – the auto care company – has warned a lack of knowledge among novice motorists could end up proving costly.
It issued this statement in light of figures from the Driving Standards Agency that showed 13 per cent of people taking their tests are failing the Show We, Tell Me section.
This part of the examination requires participants to explain how they would go about tasks such as an oil check.
Comma representative Mike Bewsey claimed the DSA statistics reflect a worrying trend.
Referring to young motorists, he commented: "They are perhaps the first generation of drivers who don't have the benefit of parents who would do the basics to their car, like checking oil, religiously."
People were advised the average bill to fix an engine that has received insufficient lubrication is more than £1,400.
Meanwhile, ladies who are unsure about certain aspects of basic maintenance may find a local female-friendly garage can help with such car checks.
