Female drivers over the age of 55 may be among those motorists hardest hit by the increased cost of running a vehicle.

According to a recent study by MoneyExpert.com, 29 per cent of drivers over the age of 55 say they have travelled less by car over the past year because of the cost.

Meanwhile, figures from the Alliance Trust also recently highlighted that the over 75s have been hardest hit by increasing inflation.

Overall, a quarter of all motorists now use their cars less, with 78 per cent citing the rising price of fuel as being their main deterrent.

Car insurance and vehicle maintenance costs were also cited by some motorists as being the main reasons for not using their cars.

Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com said: "Many people are finding their finances are being squeezed to the limit and when that limit breaks something has to give. For some that means leaving the car in the drive and taking the bus or bicycle to work because driving has simply become too expensive."

He added that insurance costs are the single biggest outlay motorists have to make and urged drivers to look for the best deal they can find.
