Police warn drivers to look out for bikers

Female motorists are being urged to look out for bikers at junctions, during right turns and when overtaking.

Surrey Police has launched an awareness campaign after 18 bikers were killed in the county in 2007.

A total of 133 were also seriously injured in Surrey last year, officers said, prompting a new safety programme.

Head of Surrey road policing chief inspector Stuart Sang said: "Most motorists have no idea of the potential performance of a modern motorbike, which makes it vitally important for drivers to double check."

Statistics show the most common cause of accidents involving motorcycles is the behaviour of drivers at junctions.

Police also said riders could reduce their chances of having an accident by wearing bright clothing and taking advanced riding courses.

Officers also warned male and female drivers that it can often be hard to judge how far away bikes are, and urged motorists to look twice when attempting manoeuvres.

Bikers make up only around one per cent of traffic in the UK but account for 14 per cent of deaths and injuries on the road.
