Female Porsche owners are more likely to be approaching their middle years, while green car drivers are typically older, research suggests.

Figures from Tesco Personal Finance show the average Porsche driver is 39 years old while male and female drivers going for the Nissan Micra, sometimes seen as a 'granny car', are usually just 35.

Statistics from the company also reveal the average Toyota Prius hybrid eco car owner is 50 years of age.

Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com said: "This research has thrown up some surprising results with cars we think are normally owned by the young having a surprisingly high typical age and visa versa."

He also advised male and female drivers to shop around for car insurance when buying a car such as a Porsche, saying older drivers should not have to pay as much as some other policyholders.

Among the youngest car owners are Citroen Saxo drivers, typically 27 years old according to the figures.
