Radical congestion charge plans pushed 07 May 08
Female motorists keen to see cuts in congestion and pollution could be buoyed by radical proposals to overhaul London's charges.
Campaigners Clean Green Cars have promptly written to the new mayor of the capital, Boris Johnson, suggesting a tightening of the capital's much-debated driving fees.
The group wants stricter limits on how much carbon dioxide a car can pump out before it can use London's roads for free, warning failure to act will mean jams return.
In a statement the organisation said changes in car buying trends mean "one-in-ten of all new cars will not have to pay the congestion charge" by the end of this year.
Rather than letting low-polluting cars in for free, campaigners also suggested a fee of around £4 to further keep a lid on peak tailbacks.
Green-minded Foxy Lady Drivers Club members could also back the idea as the organisation claims it would better reduce pollution.
Conservative Mr Johnson triumphed over Labour rival and former mayor Ken Livingston at the May 1 local elections.
