FOXY Newsdesk Road charging 'could save female motorists money' 10 November 08
Female motorists who are concerned road charging schemes could increase their motoring costs and invade their privacy may be reassured by a trial scheduled for 2009, the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has claimed.
According to the green breakdown service provider, during next year's trial, volunteers will have their vehicles fitted with satellite-tracking devices which will collect road charges automatically.
How much motorists pay will reportedly be based on levels of congestion.
Director of ETA Andrew Davis said if adopted permanently the initiative could reduce traffic jams and do away with the need for road tax and fuel duty.
However, he added: "The idea remains unpopular because the government is too scared to commit itself and explain the benefits clearly."
Under the scheme, women drivers who are concerned about privacy will be able to decide whether or not their bills show details of where they have travelled.
In other news, ETA recently claimed the increasing cost of fuel has led to reduced congestion on motorways despite an increase in the overall number of cars on the road in the UK.
