A road paint which changes colour in freezing weather to warn of icy roads is being developed by a French company.

Paving firm Eurovia hopes the invention will reduce accidents and is currently trialling it in colder areas of France.

The 'smart paint' can be used for road markings and turns a light red when temperatures reach one degrees celsius or less.

According to Printed Electronics World, problems the developers are looking to overcome include "the smart paint being seen at night and ensuring the paint is able to withstand higher levels of UV rays in the summer so that the paint lasts longer".

The paint could be of interest to women drivers who have been injured or had to claim on female friendly car insurance after an accident involving black ice.

Eurovia specialises in building and maintaining roads and uses a world network of 800 quarries to supply its work sites with materials for projects.
