Scrappage scheme 'has started well'
The government's scrappage scheme could result in significant numbers of large vehicles being replaced with more environmentally-friendly models, if the comments of one manufacturer are anything to go by.
Hyundai has reported the initiative seems to have got off to a good start.
The firm explained the programme is attracting many drivers who have never purchased a brand new motor before.
Managing director Tony Whitehorn said: "Some people look a little embarrassed when they turn up at a showroom with an old car which is literally falling to pieces."
However, he assured participants any vehicle that is at least ten years old will be accepted.
Although the firm stated it was not surprised its models were proving popular, some of its dealers reported being shocked by the kind of cars being offered for scrappage.
One retailer revealed a customer had left a Jaguar XJ-S to be disposed of before leaving in a brand new i10.
Ladies who take advantage of the scrappage scheme in order to downsize may find the cost of their specialist insurance for women drivers falls as a result.
