Sneezing to cost female drivers their no-claims bonus? 16 April 08
Female drivers may be interested to read that more than two million accidents occur every year as a result of motorists sneezing.
As hay fever season sets in, many women drivers may not be surprised to see that so many accidents occur a result of the spontaneous sneeze, with a survey by esure showing that 72 per cent of drives are affected by symptoms that could affect their driving.
In addition, some 670,000 incidents occur as a result of motorists becoming distracted by their passengers sneezing, the findings show.
According to Professor Brian Lipworth, professor of allergy and respiratory medicine at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee, hay fever sufferers can find that they sneeze up to 50 times a day.
"Keep tissues at hand in the car, check the pollen count on the weather forecast and do not set out on a car journey if conditions are particularly severe," urges Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure.
NHS Direct states that hay fever affects 20 per cent of the UK population.
