Tax warning for family car owners 25 March 08
Female drivers may be interested to read that those with family cars could be particularly likely to fall foul of the recent Budget's "car tax trap". According to used car data provider CAP, those driving automatic versions of vehicles that have large engines and are less than seven years old are likely to see both significant increases in vehicle excise duty (VED) and faster depreciation from next year. The firm gave the example of a Volkswagen Passat 2.0 automatic registered since March 1st 2001. In 2009, the owner of the car will have to pay £415 in VED compared with the current rate of £210, CAP said. Mark Norman of CAP commented: "We are not talking about luxury vehicles but ordinary family cars with a typical value of £3,000 or less. "In years to come these new VED rates will come close to writing off the value of many of these cars." According to research by Unbiased.co.uk, fuel duty is the most resented UK tax, while 62 per cent of Britons say they would not welcome the prospect of higher taxes in support of environmental issues.
