'We should stay together for the sake of the money'
29 August 08

Would you stick it out in an unhappy relationship just for cheaper car insurance?

Well, the results of a new survey suggest some female drivers may be doing just that.

Research by online bank cahoot has revealed some 12.4 million people are reluctant to split with their partner during the credit crunch for fear of being faced with increased bills, such as higher motor insurance premiums.

However, it was men who were most unwilling to split from their partner in the current economic climate, with 30 per cent admitting they did not fancy going it alone at the moment, compared with 25 per cent of women.

It has been estimated that the extra cost of living alone is £266,000 over the course of a lifetime.

Matthew Timms, managing director at cahoot, said: "There are clearly economic benefits to being in a relationship, such as shared bills, lower rent and even reduced car insurance premiums."

The Centre for Economics and Business Research claims that one year on from the beginning of the credit crunch the financial situation has still not normalised.
