Women drivers 'come out on top in credit crunch'

The age old argument of who makes better drivers - women or men - may well rage on for years to come but theanswerbank.com has suggested female motorists may have the edge in the current economic climate.

It stated studies have shown the fairer sex is more aware of its fuel consumption and as a result is more efficient behind the wheel.

The group highlighted research which found men are more inclined to stay in one gear for longer, whereas women drivers move through the stages faster so the engine does not have to work as hard.

Female motorists are also gentler on the brakes, adding to their fuel efficiency, the web resource noted.

Mark Bower Dyke, chairman of car insurer BeWiser said: "Maybe it is time men became aware of their expensive driving habits and start to drive more like women."

Elsewhere, figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents have shown young female drivers are safer on the roads than their male counterparts.

They revealed one in every 754 new women motorists is likely to be killed a year, compared with one in 319 recently-qualified men.
