Women drivers 'may back MP road tax revolt' 30 June 08
Women drivers battling the rising costs of motoring could back the demands of a group of politicians saying the government should ditch road tax increases.
The Times reports the Conservative Party is tabling an amendment to the finance bill in an effort to get the Labour government to ditch retrospective duty rises.
If approved the backdated increases will apply to drivers with cars registered between 2001 and 2006.
The Times reports: "Forty Labour backbenchers have signed a motion opposing the tax, which they say will hit low-income families when fuel costs are spiralling."
According to the paper, some of this group are threatening to vote for the Tory party amendment unless they are given assurances the increase will be reviewed.
Women drivers with families could be hit if the increases, which will apply to many people carrier cars, are put into practice.
The Press Association reported chancellor Alistair Darling has met with rebel MPs to discuss the issue, but denied he had agreed to reverse the backdated increases.
